Abstract
Is it possible to reduce the world to a set of laws? Can our view of reality be limited to pure observation? Starting from György Lukács’ critique of the contemplative and alienated attitude of the human being in capitalist society, this article attempts to answer these questions through Hegel’s analysis of the chapter of the Phenomenology of Spirit devoted to the figures of “force” and “understanding”. To the limits that consciousness shows in reducing the world to a pure appearance governed by laws Hegel opposes the need to look at the totality of life and its contradictions.
